What is the maximum weight capacity of this kayak?

The kayak has a maximum user weight of 150kg. This is the total weight the hull is rated to carry safely. If you're planning to load it with camping gear as well as your own body weight make sure the combined total stays within this limit. The 22kg hull itself is not counted in that figure it's purely the load the kayak can carry while on the water.

Does it come with a paddle and spray deck?

Yes. The kayak includes a lightweight two-part paddle which splits into two sections for easier transport and storage in a car boot or bag. It also comes with a starter spray deck sized for a general adult fit. The spray deck fits over the cockpit rim and helps keep water out in choppy conditions or when paddling in rain.

How tall can you be and still fit comfortably in this kayak?

The cockpit is 80cm long and 46cm wide. Cambridge Kayaks state it accommodates paddlers up to 6ft 3in (approximately 190cm) with adequate leg room. The adjustable footrest allows you to set the correct leg position for your height which also improves your paddle stroke efficiency. If you are particularly tall it's worth checking the leg room specification before purchasing.

What storage does this kayak have?

There are several storage areas. At the rear there is a bulkhead chamber accessed via a 40cm x 20cm oval water-resistant hatch large enough for a dry bag with overnight kit. At the front there is a small round deck hatch measuring 22cm wide and 4cm deep which is suitable for a phone, keys or snacks. Two cargo nets sit front and back on the deck for bulkier items and bungee cords at the front provide additional lashing points for gear.

What does the rear bulkhead actually do?

The bulkhead is a sealed wall inside the rear of the hull. It serves two purposes. First it creates a dry storage compartment that is separate from the main cockpit area. Second and importantly it traps air inside the rear section. If the kayak capsizes and fills with water the sealed air pocket in the rear chamber helps keep the kayak afloat rather than sinking. This is a standard safety feature on touring kayaks and makes self-rescue or assisted rescue significantly easier.

What is the hull warranty and what does it cover?

Cambridge Kayaks offer a 5-year warranty on the hull and 12 months on components such as the seat, rudder system and hatches. The hull warranty covers manufacturing defects in the LLDP plastic construction. It does not cover damage caused by impact, misuse or normal wear and tear. The 5-year hull warranty is notably longer than many entry-level touring kayaks at this price point and reflects confidence in the LLDP plastic construction.

How does the foot-operated rudder system work and do I need it?

The rudder is controlled by foot pedals inside the cockpit. Pressing the left pedal turns the rudder left and pressing the right pedal turns it right. You don't need to adjust your paddle stroke to steer which keeps your speed up. In calm flat water you may rarely use it. In strong side winds or tidal currents the rudder makes a significant difference to how straight you can hold your line. For longer touring trips on exposed water it is a genuinely useful feature rather than a gimmick.

What real-world touring trips has this kayak been used for?

According to Cambridge Kayaks customers have completed some substantial journeys in this model. These include the full length of the River Thames, the entire Leeds to Liverpool Canal and a 3000km trip over 45 days from central Spain to the Portuguese coast.
